The Guardian homepage had become overly complex, with hundreds of layout possibilities changing by the minute, & 19 different container types in use. We reduced this to just 5, simplifying things for readers
& editors.
Our core design goals were to reduce overwhelm whilst better showcasing the breadth of journalism. We lightened UI elements, introduced new containers, & tweaked the aspect ratios of all imagery to favour mobile devices. The result is a calmer, more digestible experience for readers — that doesn’t limit editorial freedom.

Whilst delivering the homepage project my contract was extended
& I moved into a Lead role, overseeing the Design System team.
I lead the team & continued to work on the rollout of the homepage, but with a Design System focus to ensure the work was scalable
& could be reused by other teams in future.
My role covered numerous product teams across the organisation, tackling various user & business problems, from funding projects in ‘Supporter Revenue’ to looking at how we could improve developer handoff department-wide.
